Chair – Vince Barrett
Driffield Junior School
I have enjoyed a varied career – starting out as a management trainee in a factory before progressing to being a secondary school teacher in Sutton Coldfield. After six years – and in order to fulfil a dream – I left teaching for a while to try life on the open road as a heavy goods vehicle driver. This experience gave me a real insight into world of work and so, using this experience, my next move was to be the careers co-ordinator at Bridlington School. In 1991 I became the advisory teacher for Careers Education for the county of Humberside and I have been involved ever since in training teachers in schools throughout the Humber region in careers education.
I live in Driffield and am married to Janet who is Head of Textiles Technology at Beverley High School. We have two grown up daughters and when the elder one started at infant school, I joined the governing body as a parent governor. As the girls moved up to junior school, I moved too and became a parent governor at Driffield Junior School. Much to my daughters’ relief, I did not move to being a governor at the secondary school but remained at the junior school where I have been Chair of the Governing Body since 1999.
I have been a member of the ERAGB Council since its inception in 2005 and feel that the Association has a very important role to play in representing and supporting all governors from schools across the East Riding. As governors we have a very important job to do in making sure that all our schools are well managed and run so that children may enjoy their education and eventually take their place in society as proactive adults.
